Alicante is far becoming the gateway to Spain and the Costa Blanca’s with most airlines offering cheap flights to Spain’s most popular airport. This is the second largest city in the province of Valencia with a population of over 300,000 During the summer months the tourists out number the locals.

Castillo de Santa Barbara, is one of Europe’s largest medieval castles and from the top, offers great views over Alicante and the bay, the honey coloured structure blends in well with Mount Benacantil.

This cosmopolitan city offers the best of both worlds from classic heritage to a busy modern culture. In the Roman times it was called Lucentum ‘City of Light’, you can still visit the old ruins, just half an hour outside Alicante.

The old town ‘El Barrio’ is well worth a visit, bars and cafes line the steep narrow streets that intertwine each other like a warren, home of the 17th century Cathedral of St Nicolas, with a Spanish baroque styled chapel.
Alicante is famous for its Nougat bar ‘Turron’, brought in by the Arabs in the 16th century.


Postiguet beach with golden sand is a must during the summer months as is Alicante’s City hall in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, built in the 17th century by the French and rebuilt in the 18th after extensive damage.
At the base of the city hall stairs is a plaque ‘Cero-point’, denoting sea level from where heights across all of Spain are measured. From Monday to Saturday you can visit the Blue saloon with its amazing mirror gallery.

San Juan, Alicante’s largest beach is a short distance away from the main city. The bay stretches to the Cape of Santa Pola, with a nice park ‘El Palmeral park ‘ next to the pensionisters.
The trenet, (Also known as the tram) a small train that runs along the coast from Alicante to Denia for 93 Km, built in 1914, hugs the cliffs above the N332 highway. It passes through stunning landscapes and crosses deep gorges.
